How do Jehovah's Witnesses get around this one?
by runForever ini am the vine; you are the branches.
if you remain in me and i in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.if you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned.".
according to jehovah's witnesses this only applies to the annointed brothers of christ.

Scripturally there is no such thing as a 'non-anointed Christian'. Being a 'true Christian' and being born again are concomitant in scripture. All first century Christians were 'anointed' and all partook of the emblems. Then 1900 years later Judge Rutherford decided he knew better and dreamed up a whole new class of non-anointed true Christians. JW's prefer to believe booze Rutherford over what Jesus and the apostles taught.

by 4thgen inhello all, as you know, when jw tv was announced, our board went wild.
many comments, much speculation and alot of negative feedback on the quality, etc.
well, what has me concerned is that i have not heard a peep from any of my connections left in kingdom-land.

I wonder what the typical, average modern contemporary Christian would say about it?
"When are they going to mention Jesus? Are these really Christians?""There's no talk about Jesus. All they talk about is themselves."

Why doesn't the GB make field service optional for certain congregation members only similar to the Mormons?
by yadda yadda 2 inephesians 4:11 makes for a strong case that not every member of the congregation should have to go door-to-door.. "so christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers,..".
this shows that different members of the first century congregations served different ministerial functions.
so why don't the jw's say that field service is no longer compulsory for all congregation members, only for those who feel a calling for it per eph 4:11..... the mormons sort of do this with their young men and women 'elders' doing 2 years voluntary, genuinely full-time service (these mormons boys put in some big hours 6 days a week and have their meals provided for them, etc!

Do you suffer from WELTSCHMERZ?
by yadda yadda 2 indefinition of weltschmerz1: mental depression or apathy caused by comparison of the actual state of the world with an ideal state 2: a mood of sentimental sadness.
as a jw, horrific news and reports of terrible suffering and tragedy never especially shocked or disturbed me because of the conviction i had that it was all temporary suffering caused by satan and the demons and it was soon to end and be replaced by a wonderful new system where all those who suffered and died would be resurrected.
it took the edge off life's harshness.. these fantastical beliefs innoculated me against really feeling and empathisizing with the reality of the horror and suffering experienced by so many in this world.

Interesting comments from everyone.
I think this feeling of Weltschmerz is recognised in Buddhism by their concept of 'Dukkha', which denotes the suffering in life and the general unsatisfactoriness of life.

Did Jehovah program us to have a free will? If so, how free are we?
by I_love_Jeff insince the jehovah's witnesses believe we have no indwelling immortal spirit, are we like robots programmed with a special code called "free will"??
since robots have no indwelling immortal spirit, they can be programmed to do whatever man wants them to.
nice control tactic.. .

IF ghosts exist, I think they are likely visitors from another parallel dimension....I think there is far more to life and the Universe than we currently know, but I don't think the churches have the answers to it
I strongly agree on your second point Navytown.
Re the first point re visitors from another parallel dimension: the sheer abundance of anecdotal evidence for the paranormal does give me real pause to wonder if there's not something strange and other worldly going on. I do find it hard to believe it's all just a figment of people's imagination or psyche.
But I'm getting off the free will topic the OP started.

Can a religion claim: Only we have the truth?
by Kalos intruth is self-evident (things like: the whole is greater than its part ....).. truth is always right (things like: caring for the accident victim helplessly bleeding on the road ....).. claiming: only we have the truth is like claiming: only my university is useful.
history shows that many school/college drop-outs have made significant contributions to the society like many those who completed their education!
and on the contrary, many school/college drop-outs have made significant damage to the society like some of those who completed their education!

It's a silly notion. It's like asking "can a culture claim it is truer than another culture?", or an ethnic group saying "our race is better than every other race?"
Ever notice that there are thousands of religions and there are thousands of cultures, nationalities and languages?

Thanks exwhyzee, I'd forgotten about that thread you started.
It's interesting that you feel your mental liberation from the JW world ended your feeling of Weltschmerz. Although in that other thread I said Weltschmerz is a feeling I think I've had most of my life, I think it's got a bit worse since leaving the JW's.
Perhaps I'm just too sensitive to the suffering and plight of others, or am too idealistic about what the world should be like, or simply read too much awful news and need to stop, as 3rdgen recommends (thank you 3rdgen)!
